Shanghai Expo investment shows British creative spirit

The United Kingdom plans to invest between 10 million pounds (US$19.55 million) and 12 million pounds in its participation in World Expo 2010 Shanghai.

British Prime Minister Gordon Brown formally handed over the UK's Shanghai Expo 2010 participation document to Shanghai Mayor Han Zheng - marking Britain's official acceptance of the invitation to take part in the Expo.

187 nations, organizations confirm to join Shanghai World Expo

The number has already set a record in the World Expo history, surpassing the previous record held by Hanover, Germany, in 2000, said Zhu Yonglei, deputy director of the Bureau of Shanghai World Expo Coordination.

"Shanghai will strive to get confirmation from 200 countries or international organizations by the end of 2008," said Zhu.

45 boats to be built for visitors of Expo 2010

Expo organizers unveiled the designs of 23 boats and 22 new ferries for visitors at a transport bidding meeting.

The 45 boats will provide transport for about seven million visitors via Huangpu River during the Expo in 2010, about 10 percent of the total traffic into the Expo site, the Shanghai Port Authority said.

In preparatioin for Expo, Shanghai TV channel starts English, Japanese language broadcasting

China's economic hub, Shanghai, on Tuesday opened its first TV channel that broadcasts in foreign languages. International Channel Shanghai (ICS) is the first foreign-language TV channel in China that is not operated by China Central Television (CCTV), the state TV system.
